Fish is one of the most complete and nutritious foods, as well as being tremendously healthy. However, unfortunately it is, along with vegetables, one of the ones that generates the most fights at the table when we talk about children.
However, due to its high nutritional contribution, it is important introduce fish into the children's diet. Let's see how we can do it without drama or fighting.
To favor the acceptance of fish, an early introduction is the most recommended, although obviously, it does not ensure that, throughout childhood, we do not find moments in which the smallest reject it, since all children go through stages in which they refuse to eat certain foods and have a preference for certain others.
- The usual trend is to offer fresh fish to the smallest ones, but frozen fish can be of a similar quality, and sometimes even better, than fish that can be bought fresh. Fresh fish does not arrive so fresh everywhere, running a high risk of contamination if the appropriate temperature conditions are not maintained. When fresh, the fish has a strong smell of the sea, you can see a shiny skin, with the scales well attached to the body and pink or red gills, depending on the species.
- Frozen fish On the other hand, when it is of good quality, it is frozen as soon as it is captured, on the ship itself, so it preserves 100% its freshness.
- The third option, the canned fish, It is not widely used in childhood, although the only precaution that must be taken into account is that the container is in good condition, without external damage or visible rust. If you choose canned in oil, it is better to remove it before offering it to the child, not to add extra fat.
Let's see some suggestions so that they continue to benefit from the advantages of including fish in the children's diet:
- If the baby feeds on shredded foods and we are not yet comfortable with chewing, can be added to vegetable puree, previously steamed and without salt, as this ensures the conservation of its nutrients almost entirely. It can be eaten as often as desired, but current recommendations suggest that fish be offered to children at least 2-3 times a week.
- If we do baby led weaning or our child is older and accepts the pieces, grilled fish with olive oil is a very healthy option. It can also be garnished with garlic and parsley, or with lemon, depending on what is traditionally made at home. Among the other possibilities, baking is another one that preserves the most nutrients, while battered and fried fish, either with egg and breadcrumbs or with flour, is not so recommended because it adds a lot of unnecessary fat.
- If we still cannot get our little ones to accept the fish, camouflage amongst other well accepted foods is our last resort, although it is convenient that we continue to offer it naturally from time to time and it is not discarded in its entirety.
