Some sounds are beneficial to children's hearing. What's more: they enhance and stimulate the baby's hearing ability. Other sounds, however, do them no good. Although the enemies of the baby's ear are not specifically sounds, but are related to the volume and the way the sounds are heard.

José Luis Blanco, Head of Audiology at Oticon, explains to us who are the friends and enemies of children's hearing.

It's not that there are good sounds and bad sounds. There are sounds that stimulate the child's ear and others that, due to their volume, can damage their hearing symptoms. They are the friends and foes of children's hearing.

1. The friends of children's ears:

There are beneficial sounds, which help to generate a sense of rhythm in the child, to organize sounds appropriately in the brain and to develop a musical ear. They are all related to percussion elements:

- A wooden xylophone.

- A drum.

All children like the beating by these percussion musical instruments, helps them generate a sense of rhythm and repeat sound cadences. All children like to play, and it is also an excellent educational tool.

2. The enemies of children's ears:

What is the main enemy of the ear? Over-stimulation of the auditory system. It is incredible that there are regulations for the protection of workers against noise and that we stimulate children with video game sounds or by putting supraoral headphones with very high power.

The baby's ear is still very sensitive to auditory stimulation, and if we overdo it, we can damage a system that is still under construction. Children should be spoken to at a normal volume, without excessive noise.

Stimulate normally, at the level of the word, yes, we should never put noises above the level of the word. Even in teenagers.

How can we know if the child has a correct volume in the headphones? Do the following test: if you talk to him with headphones on with music, you speak at a normal volume from a meter away, he should be able to know what you are saying. If you do not hear, it is because the volume it has is harmful.
