Although the desire to be a mother has been growing within me since I turned 20, I had to wait to make my dream come true. Priorities come first And, like many other girls, I considered finishing my degree, finishing my thesis, getting my first employment contract and having the necessary income to become independent. So, I decided to leave my project of forming a family to bring my children into the world.

This is one of the examples of why every year fewer children are born and to older mothers.

Even having clear ideas and working to achieve this goal, I was soon in my thirties, like most of my friends, and the truth is that now I know few mothers who have had their babies before age 30. And is that the age at which Spanish women are mothers for the first time has reached the historical maximum of 31.12 years, according to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), which has just released the birth data for the first quarter of 2010.

Data for births in 2010 show that the birth rate decreased in our country last yearIn other words, fewer children are born and mothers are older.

During the first semester of 2010, 235,373 babies were born in Spain, of which 20.1 percent were children of immigrant mothers, 0.1 percent less than the previous year. A) Yes, the number of children per woman fell to 1.38 children on average, while in 2009 it was 1.39 and in 2008, 1.46. Asturias, Galicia and Castilla y León have been the autonomous communities most affected by this decrease in the birth rate and Madrid, Murcia, Catalonia, Ceuta and Melilla, which have registered the highest rates.

According to the INE, decrease in birth rate has to do with maternal age and experts believe that the main causes are related to the combined effect of a lower fertility and a progressive reduction in the number of women of childbearing age.

What do you think is due to this decrease in the birth rate? Do you think that the economic crisis has influenced the decision to bring fewer children into the world? Do you think that waiting until the age of thirty to have a baby can negatively affect the fertility of women?
