For many children and parents, the beginning of school symbolizes the discovery that the child has a special educational need. In some cases the diagnosis is not new because they already know it, however, for other families it may be a surprise.

The termSpecial educational needs (NEE), according to article 73 of Organic Law 2/2006, refers to boys and girls who require, in part or in all of their schooling, certain supports because they have a disability or conduct disorders. We tell you how to detect it.

Although the assessment of these needs is carried out by professionals, it is true that prevention is the key to improving their development and starting with the measures that best suit him / her depending on whether the SEN are linked to:

- Motor and health problems: This category includes, among others, children orthopedic disorders, children with technology dependence (for example, with ventilation), cerebral palsy, heart problems, asthma, diabetes ...

- Mental disability: Those who have significantly lower than average general intellectual functioning.

- Hearing disability: They are children who are totally or partially deaf.

- Visual disability: Students who are partially or totally blind.

- Generalized developmental disorders: Children are considered to have autistic, rett, Asperger's, infantile disintegrative, or generalized developmental disorder not specified

- Language acquisition and development: Refers to children to children who have difficulties in language acquisition, articulation or elaboration.

- Hyperactivity or attention deficit: Students who are distracted, impulsive, and sometimes accompanied by excess activity.

- Emotional behavior: It refers to children who have emotional and behavioral problems.

Finding out that your child needs support or a different work methodology is often scary and sometimes some parents can feel guilty for not being able to detect certain warning signs. Therefore, even if you are not an expert and the term SEN encompasses many different disabilities and disorders, perhaps these signs can help you consult a specialist, even if each child is different:

Expresses your emotions in a very exaggerated way and does not know how to manage them properly. For example, outbursts of anger.

- Istoo dependent on adults and demands more attention than another child his age.

Participates little in workshops or activities in which there are other children and you do not know how to behave when you are with them or have a conflict.

- He's a boy with aimpulsive personality and has little initiative.

- 3 yearsdoes not have a repertoire of 50 words nor does it form two-word sentences.

On many occasions, it will be the professional himself who will detect if the child has a special educational need and will give you the guidelines to intervene at home. However, we propose some recommendations that can help you:

- Communication is the key so try to relate as much as possible with you. Talk to him, even if he doesn't talk to you.

- Routines help you to be more confident and facilitate learning.

- Support him in those activities that are more complicated for him until he has internalized them.
