This week we had to take our 11-year-old daughter to the doctor's office for a sprained ankle, and the doctor warned us that ankle injuries are increasing due to the fact that many boys and girls are using sports shoes in an inappropriate way, due to idiom or lack of knowledge.
For this reason, I see myself in the duty to draw the attention of parents who are not realizing the importance of this issue. Now, in some schools, the fashion is NOT to fasten sneakers or leave them as loose as possible. Choosing the right sports shoes and wearing them correctly saves parents headaches, and ankle, leg, foot, tendon, and ligament discomfort for children. And always remember this: badly fastened sports shoes equals sprained ankle.
Appropriate criteria for the use of sports shoes:
1- Choose a suitable footwear, depending on the sport to be performed and the model desired, although there are sports shoes that can be used for different sports. This saves time and money.
2- Correctly use the sneaker. The foot has to be as protected as possible. Those that are fastened with velcro are the most recommended for the little ones. But for the older ones, Velcro is already a thing of the little ones and they prefer those with laces. Well, the laces must be fastened, with the tongue well extended (and not twisted or bent as they are wearing it) and that the shoes are neither tight nor loose, to avoid the involuntary movements of the sole of the foot inside, or some circulation problems that can lead to thrombi, bruising, and more pressure on the foot. If the shoe is not sufficiently attached to the child's foot, it can cause tendons to tear or move, ligament injuries, bone injuries, and the famous ankle sprains that, if not healed well, can lead to chronic sprains. or lax ligaments.
80% of ankle injuries are sprains, the most frequent in sports practice. Treatment is normally divided into 3 phases:
1- In its first hours, immobility of the affected area, and interruption and control of the inflammatory process with medications.
2- A second phase involves the rehabilitation of the area until the recovery of full ankle movement and the disappearance of pain.
3- In a third phase, a stabilized ankle joint is expected, and a program for the prevention of new injuries and relapses is established. Moms and dads, more eyes at the children's feet. A bad habit can cost your physical development dearly.
