We always tell future moms that pregnancy is health, and in most cases it is. However, there are certain circumstances linked to pregnancy that make the woman need to keep relative or absolute rest, or special care. We are going to analyze the most frequent situations that prevent the pregnant woman from leaving home.

- Risk of abortion:
By definition it would be any vaginal bleeding from a pregnant woman that occurs during the first trimester of pregnancy (always with a present fetal heartbeat); in these cases we usually recommend relative rest, not having sex with intercourse, and trying to reduce maternal stress.

- Hyperemesis gravidarum:
It is the presence of persistent nausea and vomiting, whose main risk is mother's dehydration. It is common in twin pregnancies, high maternal stress and is related to an increase in the hormone HCG typical of pregnancy. In these situations it is normal for women to lose weight, and may even faint or become dizzy. Sometimes they require hospital admission for intravenous hydration, if the woman is not able to keep anything ingested. Symptoms are usually more intense between 2 and 12 weeks of pregnancy, and remit by the second half of pregnancy. We recommend that the woman reduce stress, do not make great efforts, eat frequent and small meals, and if necessary, take the medication prescribed by the doctor to control vomiting.

- Premature bag rupture:
It is the rupture of the amniotic sac before the probable date of delivery. In those rare situations in which it occurs (perhaps due to amniocentesis, infection ...) during the first and second trimesters, absolute rest is required of the mother, who will be placed lying in bed with the lower extremities elevated, and with intravenous antibiotics. On certain occasions it is reversed, and the break is repaired.

- Threat of preterm labor:
It occurs when, from the second trimester, the woman has changes in the cervix, as a consequence of contractions that may or may not be perceived by the woman. Relative rest is recommended, no sexual intercourse, good hydration. If these measures are not controlled, admission to hospital may be necessary to stop contractions with medication.

- Delayed intrauterine growth:
It occurs in the third trimester, when the ultrasound control detects that the baby is not growing properly. When we suspect it, we recommend the woman make relative rest, have a good diet, stay away from stress (since it has been seen that it is one of the causes that can delay the growth of the fetus).

- Preeclampsia:
It is hypertension, linked to protein in the urine after the 20th week of pregnancy. The only treatment is childbirth, but until the time comes the recommendations for women are the following: bed rest on the left side as long as possible, plenty of hydration, reduce salt intake, if necessary take medication to control blood pressure, go for regular check-ups with your doctor.
